Effective SEO: 7 Link-Building Tactics For 2019

Change is a constant factor in online marketing and search engine optimization. But no matter how intricate and refined search algorithms are and how complicated the SEO's job becomes, incoming links remain a cornerstone of ranking.

But the days when quantity was everything are far in the past. The wrong links can hurt you just as much as the right ones can help. So how can you build backlinks safely and effectively in 2019? Here are seven proven ways.

1) Flatter the Influencers

Social media has extended its tentacles across the entire web, for good or for ill. Influencer marketing has become a leading technique in its own right, but the influencer concept has importance for SEO too.

If your website has content that suits an influencer's following, make sure you mention that person within it (preferably in a positive way). Any self-respecting and self-promoting figure will seize on this chance to embellish their reputation and will forward your page to their followers.

If your content is of high quality, the links will flow naturally, and that's precisely the kind of backlink you're looking for.

2) Guest Posting

Guest posting has been around for years. Its usefulness as a high-volume link building tactic came to an abrupt end in 2014 when Google hit hundreds of participating sites with heavy penalties. However, it's still very capable of generating powerful individual backlinks from high-quality sites.

Just make sure you are careful of the technique if you want to see the benefits without the risks. Create a unique, genuinely valuable post for each target site, rather than blasting the same content across the web. Also, focus on traffic and exposure and let the resulting links take care of themselves.

3) Enter Industry Awards

If your niche has an industry awards event with details published online, you should enter your site if it has a likely chance of success. Even if you don't win (which isn't necessarily the aim), most awards sites publish a list of shortlisted entrants which could give you a valuable, in-context link.

Even better, your link will be surrounded by others to your peers, giving a considerable boost to relevancy and reputation.

4) Sponsor Events or Organizations

You can also pick up highly relevant links by sponsoring events or charity organizations within your niche. However, go easy on this. Only sponsor events your brand has genuine relevance to, and keep the volume low. It's a fine line between bona fide sponsorship and blatant link buying, and you want to stay on the right side of it.

5) Claim Unlinked Mentions

Brands can often receive unsolicited mentions in third-party content without adding a link. It's a low-effort and low-risk tactic to contact the publishers of this content and ask them to turn your mention into a live link. Your results may vary, but any links you can get will be entirely natural and therefore valuable.

6) Broken Link Building

Websites which have been around for a while usually have links to sites which no longer exist. Check the big-linking sites in your niche for any broken outbound links, and send a polite email to the publisher. Point out that it is no longer working, and that switching it to a relevant page on your site would be a service to their users.

7) Powerful Press Releases

If you have something genuinely newsworthy to announce, a well-crafted press release not only gets the message out, but it usually results in several desirable links. However, be sure to stay away from the sites which distribute a single press release to thousands of low-quality announcement sites.

Pick your target news sites carefully for quality and reputation, and tweak your release to suit each site's readership. With luck, you'll gain links from these respected publications, but also from many other second-tier sites that pick up the story.

In 2019, links are only a part of the SEO mix, but they remain essential. When used with care, these seven tactics will gain you a right blend of organic links from a wide variety of sites, putting your SEO efforts on a firm foundation.
