Staying up to date on Google is important for SEO! Those working in optimization should always be paying attention to changes in rankings and traffic as well as any announcements from Google.
We’ve got you covered!
Here are two things from Google that you should know for this month.
1. Optimizing for BERT
Have you heard of the BERT algorithm?
Basically, it’s a complicated way Google analyzes text. It looks for larger themes of content instead of just keywords.
Google hasn’t been very open about how to specifically optimize for BERT, claiming there isn’t a way to do that, but we do have some hints!
John Mueller said, “If anything, there’s anything that you can do to kind of optimize for BERT, it’s essentially to make sure that your pages have natural text on them.”
Really, you should be doing that anyways!
1. Core Update
This month brought a core update you should definitely know about.
If you saw rankings that changed or dropped, that’s probably why!
Search Engine Journal said, “Being a broad core update, the January 2020 core update will impact all search results on a worldwide scale. It’s not an update that targets something specific that webmasters can improve upon.”
If you do see rankings drop, don’t panic. Keep an eye on it, assess what’s changing, and adjust.
Overall, stick with the basics. Quality content, relevant keywords, and a natural flow to your text are always important.
